Biography —
Anna M. Yonas, assistant professor of secondary social studies, received her PhD in curriculum and instruction from the University of Virginia. Her research interests include strategies to support novice social studies teachers implement best practices of historical source analysis as well as the curricula relating to traumatic and difficult histories. Before joining KU, Yonas was a classroom teacher and administrator for ten years.

Research —
Yonas researches social studies curricula and teacher learning, particularly regarding topics that are often deemed “difficult” or “controversial”. Her work has been published in Teachers College Record,The Journal of Social Studies Research, and Social Studies Research and Practice. Her current work examines how state curriculum standards represent religion, strategies to support teachers’ genocide education, and social studies teachers’ perceptions of teaching politically controversial topics.
